Codes of Conduct for a Healthy Workplace

Alison Budden | Director | MCA group

As the atmosphere of the office had grown increasingly tense, it was clear to everyone present that something needed to be done. Everyone agreed that a code of conduct for a healthy workplace must be set in order to address this issue.

We were engaged to assist the team to develop and adopt a code that applied to everyone in the business. We assisted them to create a set of expectations which included being courteous and respectful while communicating with colleagues. It included taking responsibility, using constructive feedback, speaking up and showing support for fellow employees. People were encouraged to approach difficult conversations with an open mind and respect each other’s opinions and beliefs, while managers were charged with promoting professional behavior that was both inclusive and conducive to progress.

Why set a Code of Conduct?

Codes of conduct for a healthy workplace are like guardrails on a winding mountain road. They provide clear boundaries and guidance to keep everyone safe and productive while navigating the work environment.

Setting codes of conduct for a healthy workplace is essential for the success of any business. Such codes underpin maintaining a positive work environment and can help to ensure that all employees are respected, motivated, and productive. Establishing clear rules and guidelines can help set expectations for behavior, reduce conflict, prevent harassment, and promote cooperation among staff.

What is a Code of Conduct?

A code of conduct outlines expectations and acceptable behavior, and reflects the values and principles of an organisation. It is key to maintaining an atmosphere of respect and professionalism. It is an important document that sets out the standards for how all employees should interact with each other and with those external to the company, such as customers or clients. It also serves as a guide for resolving conflicts that may arise within the workplace. An effective code of conduct provides leaders with a framework that holds everyone to account and encourages the types of behaviour that is wanted whilst discouraging behaviour that is not wanted as part of the workplace culture.

Codes of conduct need to be relevant and meaningful. Such a code should be promoted by management and implemented throughout the organisation in order to ensure that everyone is held accountable for their actions.

This means they need to be embraced and actively practiced by all and not be left on a shelf, or on the intranet page, as a lifeless or outdated e-document. To achieve this the code must be regularly reviewed for relevance and updated to reflect changes in applicable legislation, workplace rules and regulations or as business operations change. The code should also include clear consequences for violations so that employees know what is expected from them at all times.

What are the benefits?

  1. Codes of conduct provide goals that team members should strive to meet, as well as guidelines and expectations they should try to maintain while completing their tasks.
  2. Codes of conduct help create a safe and respectful work environment, where employees can interact with one another in a civil manner.
  3. Codes also promote collaboration and open communication among team members, which is the foundation of any successful workplace.
  4. By establishing clear standards of behavior and standards of performance, companies are able to ensure that both productivity and morale remain high.
  5. Customers benefit from codes of conduct because it creates an atmosphere where everyone is on the same page and working towards the same goal – success.
